Bel's Oysters
Enjoy the river and beach lifestyle while staying on our sustainable oyster farm on the beautiful Crookhaven River. Comprising a land base and 10 hectares of water leases, the farm is located in popular holiday destination Greenwell Point in a friendly co-op of oyster farmers.
The Crookhaven River is part of the Shoalhaven estuary, an area of outstanding natural beauty on the NSW south coast, 2.5 hours south of Sydney.
As a volunteer, you will assist with Aquaculture practices including the cultivation and harvest of Sydney Rock Oysters. General farm assistance includes both land and water-based work. This farm offers an exciting opportunity to work on the water in a calm river estuary with an experienced boat operator.
In your spare time, you can take our kayak around the river, surf at nearby beaches or go on a hike through bushland with amazing views and wildlife. The nearest town, Nowra, is a 30-minute bus ride and offers a cinema, cafes/restaurants and shopping. There is a small village with essentials in Greenwell Point, a 5-minute drive from the farm (and one of the best fish and chip shops in NSW).
Accommodation includes a comfortable, fully self-contained cabin for up to 2 people, separate to our home.
Food is provided (vegetarian/vegan can be accommodated) to be heated by WWOOFers or prepared in own accommodation.
The farm is accessible by train from Sydney to Bomaderry train station, where we will pick you up from the station and take you to the farm. Having your own transport is preferable but not essential.

Why I became a WWOOF Host

We became WWOOFer hosts as there is always something to do at the farm and we enjoy meeting people from around the world.
Having lived in Africa and South East Asia and experienced other cultures, we love the opportunity to give back and share our beautiful part of the world with people from overseas and other parts of Australia.
We are open to new ideas on work practices and like to give our helpers new skills they can use elsewhere.

Organic/Biological methods we use

Oyster farming is organic and sustainable by nature. The oysters grow in baskets suspended from ropes or lines and feed from nutrients in the water. The oysters are filter feeders, capable of filtering large amounts of water through their digestive systems, and effectively keeping the estuary clean. All infrastructure used on our water leases such as baskets and poles are made from recycled materials and are kind to the environment. Our floating baskets do not touch the riverbed, protecting the seaweed and ecosystems.
