Mark & Monique
Experience sustainable living on our beautiful lush 40-acre subtropical rainforest property in Kin Kin, in the Noosa Hinterland. We grow organic ginger, turmeric, medicinal plants, bush foods, fruit, vegetables and other produce using syntrophic farming and permaculture principles.
WWOOFers can gain hands-on experience in organic growing, food as medicine, rainforest conservation with many endangered species, food processing, storage, property maintenance and practical self-sufficient living. Monique influences the quality and health focus of the food with the strong naturopathic background.
We offer a private self-contained 2-bedroom cabin, wholesome meals and plenty of opportunities to learn and exchange knowledge. Noosa Heads magnificent beaches, national parks and hinterland are approximately 45 minutes away and Pomona a great small town is 15 minutes away.

Why I became a WWOOF Host

We became WWOOF Hosts because we believe some of the most valuable learning happens through sharing real experiences with other people and we actually live this lifestyle passionately, rather than just talk about how to live sustainably.
Over the years, we have created a lifestyle on our 40-acre rainforest property centered around natural health, growing nutritious food, sustainability, permaculture, syntrophic farming and living and being more aligned with nature. We would now love to share what we have learned while continuing to learn from the people who stay with us.
For us, WWOOFing is much more than exchanging help for food and accommodation. It is an opportunity to meet people from different countries, cultures and generations, share knowledge and ideas, work together, enjoy good food and hopefully inspire each other. Our property is a unique environment and has many endangered species of plants and we are passionate in preserving this pristine environment.
We hope WWOOFers leave our property with some new practical skills, knowledge and ideas they can take into their own lives that adds value to their lifestyle – and some wonderful memories of their time in the Noosa Hinterland.
Equally, we hope every person who stays with us brings something of themselves that helps us continue to learn and evolve too.
That mutual exchange and sharing of knowledge and creating abundance, is why we became WWOOF Hosts.

Organic/Biological methods we use

Our approach is based on working with natural biological systems rather than against them. We use organic growing, permaculture and syntrophic farming principles to improve soil health, increase biodiversity and develop productive growing areas within our subtropical environment.
A major part of our approach is syntrophic growing. Rather than viewing plants individually, we aim to create diverse, layered plant communities where different species perform complementary functions. We combine food-producing plants, medicinal plants, fruit trees and support species to create healthier and increasingly self-sustaining growing systems.
Biomass is extremely important to us. Plant material generated on the property is used to mulch and protect growing areas, feed soil organisms, retain moisture, reduce weeds and continually return organic matter to the soil. Pruning and vegetation management therefore become part of the fertility cycle rather than simply producing waste.
We focus strongly on:
• building healthy, biologically active soil

• maintaining extensive organic ground cover and mulch

• returning plant biomass to the soil

• encouraging biodiversity and beneficial organisms

• reducing soil disturbance wherever practical

• retaining moisture and protecting soil from the subtropical sun and heavy rainfall

• integrating different plant species rather than relying on monoculture

• composting and recycling organic materials

• using natural methods of plant and soil management

•100% non use of synthetic chemicals, herbicides and pesticides

•we are associated with many local farms, specialist growers, organizations whose focus is on sustainable living
Our organic ginger and turmeric are particularly important crops on the property and high medicinal quality. WWOOFers can gain practical experience in maintaining these growing areas, mulching, soil management, harvesting and, depending on the weather, processing and preserving the harvest.
We also grow medicinal and food plants because we see nutrition, soil health and human health as interconnected. Monique’s naturopathic background adds another dimension to this, including understanding the traditional and practical uses of different plants and the concept of growing food as medicine. We use many natural wellness approaches for ourselves and pets. We also specialize in natural protocols of wellbeing and research into these wellbeing and health methods infusing traditional and advanced natural research and methods.
Our property is also surrounded by natural flourishing subtropical rainforest, so conservation and responsible land management are important parts of what we do. We aim to maintain productive areas while respecting and protecting the larger natural ecosystem in which we live.
Our methods continue to evolve. We don’t claim to have all the answers and enjoy experimenting, observing what works in our particular climate and learning from both nature and the people who visit us.
