Laura & Chris Pennington
Our farm is 10 mins from Nabiac, nestled in beautiful countryside on the Barrington Coast. The house is in a one acre garden, set on 100 acres, much of which is forest, with around 17 acres of pasture for our 4 steers. We have around 85 chickens in 3 caravans which are moved around a 1 hectare paddock. We sell the eggs locally. We also grow veggies. We grow a variety of seasonal veggies and are in the process of making more compost. The garden also needs biocast adding soon ready for spring growth.

Why I became a WWOOF Host

We have enjoyed the energy that WWOOFers have brought with them. It has been fun meeting different people. We love sharing knowledge and ideas and are always open to suggestions. It is great to have a group effort on certain jobs, which may include: fencing, watering, collecting eggs and processing them into the cartons. We are keen for help with the veggie gardens and creating compost from weeds. Collecting rocks to use in landscaping and to clear paddocks is another upcoming job.

Organic/Biological methods we use

I use vinegar to spray weeds, coffee grounds around the veggies to deter the possum and slugs. We spray milk on black sooty mould on the citrus.

Adding apple cider vinegar, garlic, ginger and turmeric to one of the chook’s water tubs helps to keep parasites at bay. We move the chickens around and keep nesting boxes clean. We collect the manure to make compost. Good standards of hygiene are met.

our ethos is “Pampered Chooks” , who get plenty of space and shelter, ice bricks in summer and fresh veggie treats.
