Springfield Farm
64 acre organic farm, raising jersey cows, horses, sheep, chickens, turkeys, etc. Our main crops are peas, broadbeans and garlic, with the main picking season for peas and broadbeans being in December with garlic in January. Also we grow a variety of other mixed vegetables for our road side stall: zucchinis, corn, tomatoes, beetroot, etc, etc, etc. 🙂 We also make baked goods for our roadside stall daily cooked on a wood stove. General farming duties include planting, weeding, watering, picking, packaging etc. Our workload during the pea picking season is usually from early morning (ie 5am) until late morning, with the rest of the day off. Primarily on Monday, Wednesday and Fridays, with lighter picking during Tuesday and Thursdays. Springfield is in the north east of Tasmania, close to the Derby bike trails, Lavendar farm and Nabowla and the beach at Bridport, also an hour’s drive from the Pyangana cheese factory and less than an hour from Launceston.

Why I became a WWOOF Host

Assistance with family-based farm operation. We have previously enjoyed some backpacker help, and thought we would like to invite wwoofers for our busy season.

Organic/Biological methods we use

We farm with horses and tractors, irrigation from our spring fed dam, and hand cultivation/weeding as well. We grow many types of fruit and veg over the summer season, make our own hay, and use a horse and buggy to go to town. We’d be happy to share these experiences with you over the time of your stay.
