Nicholas Moss
Our property is a peaceful, plant-based nature sanctuary in the Daintree region of Far North Queensland, surrounded by tropical rainforest, crystal-clear creeks and an abundant tropical fruit forest. We welcome WWOOFers who enjoy conscious, healthy living and want to contribute to gardening, fruit growing, nursery work, property maintenance and sustainable projects. We are a drug-, alcohol- and smoke-free property offering a unique opportunity to experience tropical living, nature and community.

Why I became a WWOOF Host

I became a WWOOF Host because I enjoy sharing our sanctuary with people who are genuinely interested in nature, tropical fruit growing, raw and living foods, healthy plant-based living and sustainability.
We are developing the property as a plant-based sanctuary, tropical food forest and supportive community, and there is always something new being planted, created or improved. WWOOF provides an opportunity to meet people from around Australia and the world, exchange knowledge and skills, and work together on meaningful projects.
I hope WWOOFers leave with new practical skills, greater knowledge of tropical plants and food growing, an appreciation for raw and living foods, good friendships and memorable experiences of life in the Daintree. In return, their energy, ideas and contribution help us continue developing the sanctuary and its food forest.
For people who really connect with what we are creating, WWOOFing can also be an opportunity to experience living as part of a conscious, supportive plant-based community and potentially become involved for a longer period.

Organic/Biological methods we use

We use organic and biological growing methods throughout our tropical food forest, orchard, nursery and gardens, with a strong focus on building healthy soil and working with natural ecological processes rather than relying on synthetic chemicals.
Our methods include composting, mulching, recycling organic material, encouraging soil biology, maintaining groundcovers, mixed planting and increasing biodiversity. Fallen leaves, prunings and other suitable organic materials are returned to the soil wherever possible to build organic matter, retain moisture and support microorganisms.
We grow a diverse range of tropical fruit and edible plants rather than operating as a monoculture. Our food forest approach combines different species and layers of vegetation to create a productive system that increasingly resembles a natural tropical ecosystem.
We avoid synthetic pesticides, herbicides and other unnecessary agricultural chemicals, preferring biological, cultural and manual approaches to managing weeds, pests and plant health. We also propagate and raise many plants in our nursery for planting throughout the property.
Our long-term aim is to develop a healthy, diverse and resilient tropical food-growing ecosystem capable of producing an abundance of nutritious food while improving the soil, supporting wildlife and working in harmony with the surrounding rainforest environment.
