First Valley is an 80acre property on the Rapid Bay Road at Delamere, 100km. south of Adelaide in South Australia. The majority of the property is being revegetated and put under a Native Vegetation Heritage Agreement. The remainder has the house, barn and outbuildings, vegetable gardens, orchard, chook run and pasture for the horse and goat. We relocated from Adelaide over 30 years ago to live a sustainable, off-grid, self- sufficient, low impact lifestyle here on the beautiful Southern Fleurieu Peninsula.
I want to share my very privileged lifestyle with others. Also, I am getting older (67) and there are many projects on the property that I need a hand with to get them completed. Mixing with people from different cultures, of different ages and backgrounds, united through self-sufficiency and sustainability is affirming, it challenges your thinking and keeps you young.
Organic/Biological methods we use
We subscribe to a modified Permaculture Model of self sufficiency utilising composting, chook and horse manure and worm farming to improve the soil and increase yields, exclusively using open pollinated, non GMO seeds and soil blocking for plant propagation. No herbicides are used within the vegetable garden, the orchard or around the house and barn.
We have placed the majority of the property under a Native Vegetation Heritage Agreement and as part of the agreement very limited use of herbicide is used by contractors for a ‘cut and swab’ method of woody weed control within the Native Vegetation Heritage Agreement Area.
