ALAN Foods is our Market Garden located in Jilliby on the NSW Central Coast. ALAN FOODS stands for All Local, All Natural; a statement we stand by. Generally we sell everything we grow and occasionally we will source only local produce to on-sell but this is only a tiny portion of what we sell. Using spray free, syntropic, permaculture and no-dig methods in the garden we try to be as gentle on the land as possible whilst producing as much food as possible. The vegetable garden is approximately 1000m2 not including the paths and there is a small food forest which over the last couple of years has certainly grown into a jungle! There are two poly tunnels for season extension and several plots with many different aspects of the open valley we live in.

Why I became a WWOOF Host

We would love to have more people from any walks of life visit the farm and see what’s possible on just 2.5 acres. For our daughter to grow up seeing people from different parts of the world would be such a great experience for her. We’re also hoping to have some help on the farm to achieve our goals and help make this place even more of a paradise.

Organic/Biological methods we use

We don’t use any chemicals on our farm. The only thing we spray are things like compost teas and seaweed foliar feeds. We have a soil remineralisation program we are following and do not till the ground. We use no dig methods which include broad forking and deep compost mulch at times. There are a few hedge rows around the farm to encourage biodiversity and shade for some plants. There is a food forest which has grown into a mini jungle and habitat for many birds and insects.
